Fourth grade students at Hollis Hand Elementary are looking forward to picking food from their own garden before the last day of school. Elena Wire, a 4th grade science teacher at Hollis Hand with over 20 years of education experience at the school, wanted to teach her students where fruits and vegetables really come from.
Wire said, “When we study food chains in our science class, the discussion always turns to where do human consumers get their food. My students are always quick to respond ‘from the grocery store!’ or ‘from the refrigerator!’ I wanted them to discover where food comes from through a hands on approach, so that is where the idea of a raised garden came from.”
