Improving student attendance will be one area of focus for the Troup County School System for the 2017-2018 school year. Last month, the Board of Education voted to revise policies relating to student absences, excuses, promotion, and retention.
These revisions in policies enable high school administrators to hold students accountable for school attendance. The two policies are IHE and JBD. Parents should go to Board Policies and read the new policies. A summary states:
When a student has five (5) unexcused absences from first period, the school will notify the parents and juvenile authorities. When a student in grades 9-12 has more than seven (7) absences in a specific class in a semester course, whether excused or unexcused, the student is in danger of losing credit for the specified class unless approved by the waiver committee.
For any student with more than seven (7) unexcused absences, a waiver will not be granted. Ignorance of the rule shall not be considered sufficient cause for setting aside its effects.
