Senior Spotlight - Troup High's Edwina Basilio

Troup High - Edwina Basilio

“I’m driven and I’m determined to be the best me I can be despite my difficulties,” said ROTC’s Major, Freshman Flight Commander, Expected General, and Executive Officer; Edwina Basilio. As a member of Troup High School’s JROTC, Edwina knows that pushing through will get you through. As a young girl, she began having medical complications. Later, she was diagnosed as having two bone marrow issues, Aplastic Anemia and PNH. These are rare disorders that causes red blood cells to break down sooner than they should. The person she credits as helping her through these difficult health times is her mother, Yolonda Basilio Smith.

She credits Ms. Nichelle Wimbush for being a good mentor, “Both women play a huge role in my life. Ms. Wimbush is always there for me. When I was in the hospital, she came to see me. When I’m at school she makes sure I’m eating right and not slacking in my classes. That is important to me, because she shows she cares.”
