Everyone who interacts online is a citizen of cyberspace. As
young people learn to navigate cyberspace in increasingly complex
ways, it is imperative to teach them the tools of good
cybercitizenship.
Cybercitizenship is more than just having the technical capacity to
use technology. It also includes having the skills to critically
evaluate material found online, protect personal or identifying
information, practice courteous and responsible behavior towards
other cybercitizens, and manage potentially risky or dangerous
situations. In this way, young people are better equipped to
maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of technology use.

Educating students about cybersafety and how to be an effective cybercitizen aligns closely with each of the key competencies identified in the Georgia Performance Standards, and is crucial for young students to master. As well, the values outlined in the curriculum align well with the concept of cybercitizenship, particularly those of integrity, inquiry, community and participation. The importance of incorporating such education is increasingly paramount as the sophistication of young people’s cyber-literacy continues to develop.

With the ever-increasing availability of social networking and instant communication, the issue of misusing these technologies to intimidate, harrass, or ridicule others has become a big problem among students. Even if the behavior occurs off campus, it can still have a very significant negative impact on the school environment. Therefore, prevention of and response to this type of activity must be addressed as part of the curriculum.
