12/10/19: THS Student Wins Music Composition Competition Elevator Music

Jonathan Murphy, Troup High School senior, is passionate about music and composition. In fact, he plans to major in music education, and possibly composition, when he goes to college. He got a little taste of what success looks like when he was asked to participate in a music composition competition earlier this year.

He won.

As part of the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) composition competition, students from all across the state submit their musical masterpieces to be judged by professors and music educators. The pieces have to be ten minutes and written for up to eight voices or instruments. Jonathon’s winning piece “Elevator Music” was one of 14 pieces chosen.

12/06/19: TCSS Schools Named to Distinguished and Reward Schools Listing

Recently, the Georgia Department of Education released its list of 2019-2020 Distinguished and Reward Schools. Three Troup County School System (TCSS) elementary schools made the list:

  • Long Cane Elementary – Distinguished School
  • Franklin Forest Elementary – Reward School
  • Rosemont Elementary – Reward School

“It is an honor to see our schools recognized for making progress and great improvements on this year’s GMAS. It shows we are on our way,” said Dr. Brian Shumate, TCSS Superintendent.

To receive a distinguished school designation means that a school is one of the highest-performing Title I schools. They are among the top five percent of Title I Schoolwide schools and Title I Targeted Assistance schools in Georgia.
