Candace McGhee, Principal of Ethel W. Kight Elementary, couldn't wait to share her favorite children's book for I Heart Literacy Week, a week designed for TCSS educators and students to share their favorite books in support of the Troup County School System's priority on increasing literacy rates for students. Literacy is a larger concept that encompasses skills like reading, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. McGhee said:
"My favorite children's book is Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. The story is about a little girl named Grace who tries out for the role of Peter Pan in the school play, even though her classmates say she cannot play Peter Pan because she is black and a girl. Grace is determined and believes that she can do anything she sets her mind to.
I love this story because it truly has an inspirational message about believing in yourself no matter what other people say, following your dreams to become whatever you want - regardless of what others think - and remembering that you are capable of doing and becoming anything you want no matter your gender or race."
