01/28/20: TCSS and Partners Host Preventative Tobacco Session for Parents Vaping Crisis

Join TCSS, WellStar, and local law enforcement on Feb. 6th @ 6:30 pm @ Callaway Conference Center as we host a session on:

- Living tobacco/vaping free

- The health effects of tobacco/vaping

- Preventative measures against tobacco/vaping usage

- Positive health decision making
 

01/27/20: Get Troup Reading Summit GTR

Get Troup Reading is hosting their first reading summit next month. The stakeholder group, consisting of over 40 members, met in October to begin planning the event and inviting speakers to share their expertise. They hope to see 200-300 community members in attendance. In addition, the summit is approved by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning for four hours of continuing education credits. It is a single session that early learning center employees, and some paraprofessionals who work in the school system, can earn credits by attending the free event.

The summit will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 9:00 am – 2:00 pm and the mini-talks from experts in the subject area are the highlight of the event:

 

  • Randy Nix – Georgia House of Representatives
  • Judge Michael Key – Judge, Troup County Juvenile Court
  • Arianne Weldon – Director, Get Georgia Reading
  • Dr. Garry McGibony – GaDoE Deputy Supt., Office of School Safety and Climate
  • Dr. Lacey Southerland – Point University Dept. Chair, Child and Youth Development
01/23/20: Global World Mania Competition Global Mania

Students in Ms. Cox's gifted resources classes at Gardner Newman Middle School recently competed in the Global  Word Mania competition through Literacy Planet.  Sixth graders from Gardner Newman came in second place in the US and Canada Region. Seventh and eighth graders from Gardner Newman placed in the top 10.  

01/21/20: Representative Ferguson Visits Long Cane Middle School Drone Tech

U.S. Representative Drew Ferguson visited Long Cane Middle School to speak with Mr. McCalla’s Drone Tech class. He discussed the laws and ethics of commercially owning and using drones.

 The students discussed their views regarding the legal age of having a commercial permit to use a drone from the age of twelve to sixteen. Representative Ferguson took time to discuss this issue with students, and explain the legalities of lowering the legal age of commercially owning a drone.
